Kruger Rhino Protection Project
A South African G20 Legacy Project

Tracker Academy has signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement (TCA) with South African National Parks (SANParks) to support rhino protection in Kruger National Park. The Agreement was personally endorsed by Minister Dr Dion George (DFFE) after his visit to our Sandringham training base, where he saw our trackers in action.
This initiative is recognised as one of South Africa’s G20 Legacy Projects. In simple terms: Kruger sets the strategy; our expert trackers do the on-the-ground work to keep rhinos safe.

What we’re doing with Kruger National Park
1. Advanced man-tracking for Field Rangers:
We train Kruger’s rangers in advanced tracking to sharpen detection, trailing, and decision-making in the field.
2. Deploying Rhino Monitors:
We place Tracker Academy graduates inside Kruger as dedicated Rhino Monitors to strengthen data collection and support patrols.

Why it matters
Professional trackers—many from local villages—bring practical, proven skills that increase early detection, improve patrol effectiveness, and help turn the tide against rhino poaching in Kruger. It’s focused, low-impact, and aligned to conservation law and best practice.
Part of a bigger push
The project forms part of the Kruger Rhino Renaissance Foundation’s broader effort to mobilise additional partners for rhino protection.
Important
All Tracker Academy graduates and Kruger rangers trained by us are subject to regular integrity testing, in line with SANParks’ protocols and our own standards for ethical conduct.
Gratitude
This partnership is possible thanks to leadership in Kruger. Our sincere thanks to Mr Oscar Mthimkhulu (Managing Executive) and his senior team for their vision. We are also grateful to Blacky Komani, Dave Varty, Jerry Mabena, Dr Danie Pienaar, Cathy Dreyer, and Dr Sam Ferreira for their instrumental roles in getting this over the line.
